Final Thoughts from the Graduates
Hello Friends and Family of BizComm Students:
As we approach graduation, and the culmination of our experience in the Business Communication Emphasis of the Minor in Professional Writing, we would like to share our thoughts, accomplishments, and future plans with you: our friends, family, internship supervisors, and service learning project clients.
Message from Dr. LeeAnne Kryder
Dear Friends and Family, Class of 2006:
Your friends, family, interns, and students have been members of my first class in the Professional Writing Minor/ Business Communication Emphasis here at UCSB. It is a joy and a privilege to write a note to you about their accomplishments.
You probably know that this minor is composed of students who applied and were chosen by Writing Program faculty; this year we had 78 applicants and accepted 60. In our newest of the three emphases, Business Communication, we accepted 19 students. So, these students were accomplished before they arrived!
After sharing three “capstone” classes over the past six months, I have gotten to know each student better and have come to appreciate him or her even more. I’m very proud of their accomplishments—they each wrote an e-newsletter and a brochure in the Winter Quarter. Among other tasks, they worked on various logos and prepared proposals for our website.
This special edition of our e-newsletter that links to the “bizcomm” website showcases their work. Each student created a website, with his/her own logo, skills matrix, resume and portfolio. Each worked on an internship and a team-based “service learning” project. Their flexibility, dedication, and talents are much appreciated, both by me and by those who have already benefited from their written work.
Some of the students will become “corporate communication” professionals; some will work in other professions, using their polished writing skills to further those careers. I think the students have done more than polish their communication skills; they have made themselves “ready for the journey” to establish themselves in the workplace and the world at large. Please join me in celebrating their accomplishments and in wishing them well!
